A happy May to my Erlton neighbours! A special thanks goes out to the volunteers who went out for the Bow River Cleanup.
This will be my last newsletter update to you as your Alderman. May 31 marks the official start of the campaign blackout period and, in the interests of fairness to all candidates in the October Municipal Election, my communications will shift from ‘Elected Official’ to ‘Candidate’. It is my hope that your CA Board will continue to publish my monthly reports through October, as well as those from all candidates in the election – maybe we can get a great debate going! In the spirit of promoting debate, I want to spend this report reviewing the work I’ve done over the last two and a half years – both in terms of big-picture transforming government work at CityHall, as well as the in-the-trenches work addressing the issues in Erlton .
I’ve been an enthusiastic supporter of driving Mayor Nenshi’s Transforming Government initiatives such as Cutting Red Tape through to establishing criteria-based decision-making. I am excited about Transit’s Route Ahead, the new Framework for Growth and Change and how we are overhauling the planning process in our City with NextCity. Pilots on how we deploy our civil service such as Strong Neighbourhoods initiatives are making excellent progress towards putting our Neighbourhood’s First. Finally, I am engaged in reworking our relationship with the Province so Calgary is better equipped to take care of Calgarians through a strong City Charter. There is a great deal of truly transformative work underway and I’m really pleased to report that Ward 9 is at the forefront.
Together, we have made great progress in Erlton. Initiatives such as the Mission Road Main Street Innovation Project, working with your Community Association to ensure great outcomes with the Apex lands and a number of individual redevelopment projects in South Erlton, and the introduction of stricter rules on home based massage parlors are some examples. Exciting things are happening in Erlton and I look forward to continuing to work with you on them.
